Syria People`s Assembly argued to “Reschedule Local Elections”

(Dp-news – Sana) DAMASCUS- During its 7th meeting of the 23rd ordinary session of the 9th legislative term chaired by Speaker of People's Assembly Mahmoud al-Abrash, Syria People's Assembly asked President Bashar al-Assad to consider postponing the date of the local councils' elections to consolidate the current reforms, pending the recommendations of the comprehensive national dialogue for democratic elections according to the Constitution.

The Assembly discussed on Thursday the date for holding local council elections on December 12th, 2011 according to Decree No. 391 issued on October 5th, 2011.

Syrian Minister of Interior, Mohammad al-Shaar, reviewed the current security situation in Syria and the efforts exerted to prevent all attempts of destabilizing the country, pointing out that Syria is recovering from armed terrorist groups which are practicing killing and sabotage.

The Minister stressed that the crimes committed by the armed terrorist groups backed by foreign powers under the pretext of achieving legitimate demands are far from reforms and the values of the Syrian people.

He also stressed that Syria is progressing in the reform process and will restore stability and security and emerge out of crisis stronger under the leadership of President Bashar al-Assad.

Minister Al-Shaar added that the conspiracy against Syria is because of its stances in support of resistance and the Arab rights and rejection of western dictations.

He pointed out to the provocative campaigns launched by satellite channels through fabricating events, adding that those channels work according to foreign plots that aim at undermining Syria.

For his part, Member of People's Assembly Ghaleb Oneiz said that the Assembly members have been observing the movement accompanying preparations for the local administration elections, concluding that there are issues that have to be addressed legally and socially before holding the elections.

In an interview with the Syrian TV on Thursday, Oneiz said that postponing the elections constitutes a service to citizens and an opportunity to raise their awareness on the Elections' Law.

He pointed out to the presidential decision on forming a committee for considering the Constitution, adding that time is needed to see the outcomes of the committee and the constitutional amendments.

Oneiz said that the national dialogue in the governorates gave rise to proposals and views that must be discussed at the comprehensive national dialogue.

In turn, Dr. Rama Aziz, member of the People's Assembly, said that the Assembly's deliberations showed a general desire for postponing the local administration elections until after the national dialogue conference.

She added that the postponement is an opportunity for all the spectrums to meet so as to share their views and ideas, for the electoral process to proceed in a democratic and transparent way.
