AL chief regrets Syrian protesters' assault on Opposition Delegation

(Dp-News - Xinhua)

CAIRO- Dozens of protesters banned on Wednesday a high-profile group of veteran Syrian dissidents from entering Arab League headquarters to meet the Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi, hurling eggs and tomatoes at them, according to the report.

The Arab League (AL) Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi expressed his regret that Syrian protestors demonstrating at the AL headquarters assaulted a Syrian opposition delegation on Wednesday, Egyptian official news agency MENA reported.
al-Arabi said at a press conference that the AL will meet all the Syrian opposition members and that he had met representatives of the Syrian National Council (SNC) for "many times."

He added, "the Arab working plan requires communications with Damascus, the oppositions and big numbers of Arab countries, and the meeting on Saturday is to evaluate the whole situation upon the available information of each party."
As for freezing Syrian membership in the AL, Arabi said "any suggestion from any country will be discussed by the ministerial council."

After meeting with Arabi, Hassan Abdul-Azim, the general coordinator for the National Coordination Association of the National Democratic Change Movements, said the association that works inside Syrian government rejects foreign interference and supports toppling Syrian regime.

Abdul-Azim asked the pan-Arab organization to send Arab and international observers to protect young protestors from oppression.
Abdul-Azim is the only person from the Syrian delegation that was able to avoid protestors and meet Arabi.
Regarding the delegation's stand toward freezing Syrian membership, Abdul-Azim said, "before the decision of freezing, we asked the AL to play its part."
He said that as "a national opposition", they want to form a government which includes "all classes", adding that "we reject foreign interference."

For their part, Syrian protestors at AL said that those delegates are not from Syrian opposition but are loyalists to Syrian regime.
The AL is expected to hold a ministerial meeting on Syria on Nov. 11 and 12.
