DAMASCUS- The Cabinet held a meeting Tuesday chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Adel Safar and discussed the economic situation in light of escalating foreign pressure and its repercussion on national economy and citizens' livelihoods.
In a statement to journalists after the meeting, Information Minister Dr. Adnan Mahmoud said that the Cabinet affirmed that the government is committed to provide all the goods, services and necessities to citizens and reduce burdens caused by the current situation.
He pointed out that the Cabinet instructed ministries and relevant sectors to adopt practical solutions and take steps to control markets and prices, support local industries increase production, and provide basic goods, facilities and infrastructure.
Minister Mahmoud reassured citizens that the government is following up on issues related to everyday needs on daily basis, and that the government instructed the Economy Ministry to control prices and prevent merchants from exploiting the circumstances by raising prices to achieve personal gains at the expense of citizens.
He added that the government will work to oversee the transportation of goods to areas which witnessed terrorist acts, particularly in Damascus Countryside where services were affected by the terrorists who attack transport, electricity grids, communication networks and public utilities establishments and hindered access to fuel.
Minister Mahmoud pointed out that after specified authorities carried out operations and arrested terrorists, things are back to normal and the relevant authorities in Damascus Countryside are working to provide citizens' needs and restore services to normal.
He also stressed that economic pressure is part of the psychological warfare waged on Syria to affect the Syrians' morale.
