Ahead of Ramadan`s end & Eid al-Fitr, Syria violence is ON

(Dp-news)

SYRIA- Ahead of Ramadan end (the Fast month for Muslims) and as the Religious Court in Damascus announced that the Sunday August 19th is the first day of Eid al-Fitr, clashes have been reporting all over the country.

State-run news agency SANA reported Saturday, President Bashar al-Assad received a cable from First Religious Judge of Damascus Ahmad Armoush saying that the Religious Court in Damascus announced that the Sunday August 19th is the first day of Eid al-Fitr.

In a similar cable, Grand Mufti of the Republic Dr. Ahamad Badreddin Hassoun offered congratulations and best wishes to President al-Assad and the Syrian people, praying that Eid al-Fitr will herald comfort, blessings and victory, SANA added.

According to foreign media reports, Syria`s regime on Saturday airstrikes and shelling targeted the rebel areas across the country, including the southern province of Daraa, the northern region of Aleppo, Deir el-Zour to the east and the suburbs of the capital, Damascus, activists said. Activists added at least 15 people were killed in the Deir el-Zour area.

In Damascus, a U.N. spokeswoman said the last of the organization's observers still in Syria have started to leave the country ahead of the official end of their mission at midnight Sunday. There are about 100 observers left in Syria -- a third of the number at the peak of the mission earlier this year.

Most will leave within hours, though some could be delayed by logistics, Juliette Touma told The Associated Press.

On the other hand, SANA reported Saturday that “Syrian armed forces continued pursuing the terrorists’ mercenaries who intimidated the civilians in the country.”

Syrian regime claims that such causalities and incidents of violence have been applied by "armed terrorist groups" which “have been funded from abroad” and who “aim to undermine people & country”.

Syrian activists` groups said earlier that more than 20,000 Syrian nationals have been killed during violence and clashes erupted 17-month ago when a revolution against President Bashar al-Assad began in March 2011, but press reports indicated that it`s impossible to independently verify the casualties in country.

The United Nations’ Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Valerie Amos, spent much of this past week in Syria. In a statement released to the press on Thursday Amos describes a humanitarian crisis that is leaving 2.5 million Syrians in need of medical, food, shelter, and sanitary assistance.
