Medical E-Library at MTN Cancer Research Center in Damascus

(DP-News - MTN)
DAMASCUS- MTN Syria announced the completion of the Electronic Medical Library, one of the main components of the MTN Cancer Research Center. In late 2009, the United Nations Development Program in Syria launched the center in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, the Planning Commission and MTN Syria.

The project aims to develop a detailed E-database for Cancer cases in Syria connecting Al-Beiruni University Hospital and the Children’s University Hospital in Damascus with Al-Kindi University Hospital in Aleppo and Tishreen University Hospital in Latakia.

This will ultimately lead to the ability to perform various statistical researches on cancer cases, and then move on to the development of the first comprehensive map illustrating cancer cases in Syria.

The E-library includes 14 computer stations equipped with high speed internet access to enable students and researchers to access HINARI Online (Health Internetwork access to Research Initiative); set up by the World Health Organization ten years ago to provide specialists with access to one of the world’s largest collections of biomedical and health literature.

Commenting on the launch, Mr. Anas Al-Khani, General Manager of MTN Corporate Services, said “We are committed to supporting Syria’s medical sector and the MTN Cancer Research Center and the E-Library demonstrate our commitment to the development of the country’s healthcare sector. Through this E-Library, practitioners, researchers and students will have access to timely, relevant, high quality scientific information including 8,500 journals and 7,000 E-books that will assist them in evidence-based health care and to conduct high-quality research.”

The central database offered by the MTN Cancer Research Center will address time delays associated with moving hard-copy medical files of patients from one hospital to another or in some cases losing the file completely.  Through the central database doctors from any of the 4

Hospitals connected to the system will be able to instantly access their patients’ record and update it as necessary.MTN is investing US$100,000 annually in the Cancer Research Center project over a 5-year period.
