Al-Moallem meets Brahimi in Damascus (SANA)

Brahimi presses for “Truce plan for Syria Crisis”

(Dp-news)
DAMASCUS- International envoy for Syria crisis, Lakhdar Brahimi, met on Saturday with Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem to press for a brief ceasefire between President Bashar al-Assad's forces and rebels.

The Syrian government says talks on Saturday between international peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi and the country's foreign minister were "serious" and "constructive."

The state-run SANA news agency says “Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Walid al-Moallem, on Saturday reviewed with UN envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, and the accompanying delegation the developments and the efforts currently exerted by the UN in Syria on the humanitarian level and regarding Brahimi's mission.”

A statement issued by the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry following al-Moallem and Brahimi's meeting, which took place at the Ministry's headquarters, described the talks as "constructive" and "serious".

It said both sides discussed means of developing cooperation in this regard and what Syria is providing to facilitate Brahimi's mission.

According to the statement, talks also touched upon what is required from the rest of the parties which are undermining the UN envoy's mission by going on with arming, hosting, training and funding the armed terrorist groups.

Press reports on Saturday said that Brahimi is pushing for Syrian officials to support a cease-fire during the four-day Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha that begins October 26.

The secretaries-general of the U.N. and the Arab League issued a statement Friday calling for a cessation of violence during the religious period.

A previous cease-fire in April collapsed after just a few days, with each side blaming the other.

The two sides discussed the objective and realistic conditions for halting violence by any of the parties with the aim to prepare the atmosphere for the comprehensive dialogue among the Syrians, viewed by the Syrian government as the only way out of the current situation away from any form of foreign interference, according to SANA.

SANA added that the meeting between al-Moallem and Brahimi was attended by Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Fayssal Mikdad, Assistant Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Ahmad Arnous, Legal Advisor at the Ministry, Riyad al-Dawoodi and directors of the International Organizations Department and Press Department at the Ministry.

Upon his arrival at Damascus International Airport on Friday, Brahimi said in a statement to journalists ''We will discuss the importance of decreasing violence and the possibility of ending it on the occasion of Eid al-Adha.''

The United Nations-Arab League envoy working for a cease-fire, Lakhdar Brahimi, arrived in Damascus on Friday.

Brahimi will meet with President Bashar al-Assad during a trip expected to last several days, said Brahimi's spokesman, Ahmad Fawzi.

Inside the country, fresh clashes between security forces and rebels erupted across Syria on Saturday.

Reports said that more than 30,000 people have been killed in the conflict as scores have died daily in fighting.
