President al-Assad: Any Initiative or Political Process should be Based on Halting Terrorism

(Dp-news)
DAMASCUS- Peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi on Sunday met President Bashar al-Assad and later appealed to both sides in Syria’s conflict to cease fire for a Muslim holiday this week, even as a deadly blast rocked the country’s capital.

President Bashar al-Assad stressed that Syria supports the efforts of the UN envoy to Syria and is open to any sincere efforts seeking to find a political solution to the crisis based on respecting Syria's sovereignty and rejecting any foreign interference, Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported Sunday.

SANA added that President's stress came during his meeting with the UN envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, which tackled the developments in Syria and the efforts exerted by Brahimi and the outcomes of his latest tour to a number of countries in the region.

President al-Assad also clarified that any initiative or political process should be essentially based on the principle of halting terrorism and what is required in this regard from the countries involved in supporting, arming and harboring the terrorists in Syria to halt such acts, according to state-run media.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem, Presidential Political and Media Advisor, Dr. Bouthaina Shaaban, Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Fayssal Mikdad, Assistant Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Ahmad Arnous, and Head of Foreign Media Department at the Ministry, Jihad Makdissi.

After meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad; U.N. peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi has appealed to both sides in Syria’s conflict to cease fire for the Muslim holiday, Eid al-Adha, this week.

The U.N.-Arab League envoy told reporters that the cease-fire call was his, “personal initiative, not a blueprint for peace.”

Also on Sunday, Brahimi met with the ambassadors of Russia and China—countries that have blocked resolutions for tough actions against Syria at the UN Security Council—an AFP reporter said.

Brahimi has visited several countries with influence in the Syrian conflict over the past week, including Lebanon and Iran, while warning that the violence could spread and set the entire region ablaze.

Syrian government forces and rebels have both agreed in the past to internationally brokered cease-fires only to then promptly violate them and there is little indication that either is willing to stop fighting now.
