Syrian Rebels pick U.S. Citizen as Provisional PM

(Dp-news)

Agencies- On March 19 and at a meeting in Istanbul, Syria's opposition National Coalition named Ghassan Hitto as Syria’s Provisional Prime Minister to govern what it calls the “liberated areas”.

Press reports said on Tuesday that Syria’s main exile opposition coalition elected a naturalized Syrian-born American citizen early Tuesday to be the first prime minister of an provisional Syrian government, charged with funneling aid to rebels inside Syria and offering an alternative to the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

Syria’s Provisional PM Hitto is tasked with heading up a provisional government for large areas of Syria no longer controlled by President Bashar al-Assad`s regime. He pledged to build a "new Syria", but internal critics voiced doubts about his ability to lead. The opposition also hopes that the establishment of the Provisional government will attract stronger backing from the West and Arab states.

Earlier, the commander of the rebel Free Syrian Army said his group would work "under the umbrella" of any new government.

"Any institutions not following this government would be considered to be acting illegitimately and would be prosecuted," Gen Selim Idriss Idriss told AFP news agency.

Ghassan Hitto was born in Damascus in 1963; he received degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science from US schools before working in the US.

Hitto's resume includes 25 years of experience with high-tech and telecommunications companies, including 16 years in executive management roles. Last November he left his job to lead the SNC's humanitarian assistance arm, the Turkey-based Assistance Coordination Unit.

All international efforts to stop the Syrian conflict have so far failed. The revolt against President al-Assad's regime, which began in March 2011 when mass protests in Syria began in mid March in Dera'a, in the country's south, then spreading to other regions, has turned into war that has claimed more than 70,000 lives, with more than 1 million refugees and 2.5 million people internally displaced.
