Syria's Internet Traffic is coming Back Online

(DP-News – Omar alShaar )

Damascus- Internet is back to Syria on05:30 pm, after 20-hour blackout. Google date showed a return of Internet traffic inside the country at around 5:20pm on Wednesday.

Reports said that Internet inside the two years conflict country went down starting 10:45 pm Damascus local time on Tuesday.

Syria's Internet service returned around 5:30pm Wednesday, after an almost 20-hour blackout, which the state news agency (SANA) had blamed on a fault in optical fiber cables.

"Internet services and phone calls between provinces were cut off Tuesday evening because of a fault in optical fiber cables," SANA said.

Landline phone services between Syrian provinces had also been down since Tuesday, SANA added.

"Efforts are still on to fix the faults and to bring Internet and telephone services back up as soon as possible," SANA reported quoting a communications official.

Jim Cowie, chief technology officer at Renesys, a US company that tracks global Internet traffic, said the outage looked similar to the one seen last November.

"The outage took place very quickly, was seen throughout the world, and (with a few small technical exceptions) covers the entire Syrian Internet," Cowie said in an email to Reuters.

"We don't see any effects in neighboring countries, and we don't see anything to suggest that the outage was caused by damage to one or another of the several cables that connect Syria with the outside world," he added.

Activists who frequently use the Internet to report on violence engulfing their country blamed the authorities for the blackout.

"Even satellite communication devices" used by many anti-government activists to avoid surveillance "have been slow," a Syrian activist currently out of his country told AFP's Beirut bureau.

"I think the regime has a plan to stage some kind of attack. That's what happens every time Internet goes down," said the activist, an Internet expert who identified himself as Fares.

During November’s Internet blackout, Syria's Information Minister Omran al-Zoabi had then claimed "terrorists" had attacked Syria's Internet network.
