Damascus- Syria`s President Bashar al-Assad met Tuesday evening with visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, who arrived earlier in the capital Damascus for talks about the recent development in the region following the Israeli attack on Syria earlier this week.

"The Syrian people and their brave army which gain important achievements in combating terrorism and the Takfiri groups are able to confront the Israeli risks which constitute one face of this terrorism which targets Syria daily," President al-Assad said, according to Syria`s state news agency SANA.

SANA said that talks during the meeting dealt with the latest developments in the region and the dangers threatening it after the Israeli aggression on Syria.

The talks also tackled cooperation between Syria and Iran and the commitment of both countries to boost them in all domains, SANA added.

Coming from a visit in Jordan, Salehi unannounced visit to Damascus on Tuesday is expected to express Iran's "unlimited support" for the Syrian administration, according to the pan-Arab al-Mayadeen TV.

In Amman, Iran's top diplomat called for dialogue between the Syrian regime and "peaceful" opposition groups, warning that the impact of the conflict would affect the entire region.

During his visit to Jordan on Tuesday, Salehi warned that "if there is any vacuum in Syria, these negative consequences will affect all countries."

Salehi also stressed that the future of Syria could only be determined by Syrians without foreign intervention, calling on the opposition to embark on discussions with the current administration to form a provisional government.

The top Iranian official's visit comes after Israel reportedly carried out two separate attacks against Syrian sites last week. Israeli attacks targeted military sites in Damascus and resulted in huge losses.

Iran condemned those strikes and has said it is ready to train the Syrian army, which is in its third year of a conflict against rebels seeking to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.
