Damascus hit by double 'suicide bombing' that killed 14, on Tuesday

(Dp-news)

Damascus- Suspected twin suicide bombers targeted a Damascus police station Tuesday killing at least 14 people, as the Syrian army launched multiple attacks on rebel positions in the northern areas of the country.

The blasts wounded more than 30 people, state media and the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights activist group said.

They caused widespread damage in the capital’s central al-Marjeh neighborhood, with state TV broadcasting images of blood and broken glass on the pavement near the scene.

“The number of casualties after a twin suicide attack in al-Marjeh Square has risen to 14 dead and 31 injured,” said the channel. “The two suicide explosions took place near a police station.”

The Observatory put the death toll at 15. It said one of the blasts “was caused by a suicide bomb attacker who blew himself up inside the police station.”

“A second explosion took place just outside the police station,” the Britain-based group said, without elaborating on the nature of that blast.

“The number of casualties is expected to rise because several of the wounded are in critical condition,” added the Observatory, which relies on a network of activists, doctors and lawyers in Syria for its reports.

The Syrian regime denounced the attack, saying “armed terrorist groups and those behind them have failed completely because of the victories achieved by our brave army,” state news agency SANA reported.

On Tuesday morning, Two suicide bombers had blown themselves up in a central al-Marjeh square, causing casualties, Syria TV reports.

Syria`s official news agency, SANA, said then "Two people martyred and 26 others injured in the explosion of two explosive devices planted by terrorists in al-Marjeh square in Damascus on Tuesday."

"Two suicide bombers attacked Marjeh square causing casualties and material damage," Syrian state-owned Al-Ikhbariya TV reported earlier on Tuesday.

The Al-Ikhbariya TV station showed footage of broken shop facades and mangled cars in the central al-Marjeh Square. The state-owned TV station also screened images showing badly damaged vehicles and bloodied pavements. Ambulance workers were seen carrying the wounded from the busy square.

Suicide attacks and car bombs have become common in Damascus, press reports said on Tuesday.

Syrian state media blamed terrorists, the term they commonly use when referring to antiregime rebels. The Al Qaeda-linked faction Jabhat al-Nusra has claimed responsibility for past suicide attacks and car bombs.

Tuesday `s twin explosions in the capital are the first since government troops captured a strategic town in the central province of Homs, the linchpin linking the capital Damascus with the regime strongholds on the Mediterranean coast.
