Khan Murad Basha; Museum for Mosaic Art

(DP-News-Sana)

Also known as Ma'rrat al-Numan Museum, once inside the visitors immediately realize through the mosaic paintings which cover the place that the Khan is no longer an inn; it has turned into an artistic exhibition with expressionistic iconic paintings relating legendary tales of ancient times.

The Khan is located on an area of 7 dunums (1 hectare is equal to 10 dunums), and consists of four suites and lobbies with pointed arches based on stone pillars.

The inscription on top of the entrance arch explains that the Khan was built in 1546 by Murad Jalabi Basha to be used as a rest house and a hotel for travelers.

A mosque and a hospice lie at the center of the Khan's square. There are service and economic utilities in the western part of the Khan that include a market, the hospice's bath, a bakery, crop stores and passages to distribute water to all the parts of the Khan.

Head of Ma'rrat al-Numan Antiquities Department Ghazi Alolo talked to SANA about the most famous paintings exhibited at the museum.

He spoke particularly of Hercules painting, the Roman name for the Greek demigod Heracles, son of Jupiter (the Roman equivalent of Zeus), which he said is one of the archeological masterpieces which form a source of pride to the Museum.

The painting tells the story of the legendary return of the Heracles dynasty that adds more grandeur to the Greek history.

Khan Murad Basha has been classified as one of the first world museums specialized in mosaic art, as the mosaic pictures that spread all over the walls and floor cover 2000 square meters of the museum.

It contributes to the activation of tourism movement in the region and is the destination for tourists, with approximately 10,000 visitors annually to enjoy the art of mosaic and roam in this large heritage.

Due to the importance of this museum, the Antiquities Department has allocated S.P 7 million to rehabilitate the museum and preparing brochures and explanations to introduce the exhibited items.
