“Guards of Silence”

Damascus- When young Zein wrote her first story M'azzaz (supported; here it used as a name of female), who was murdered; she knew that her mother was killed, too.
Every time she came closer to truth, or tried to get out of the silence which was capturing her lifestyle and attempt to reach self-realization; she faced threats by the surrounding, the guards of silence, reminding her of her mother's death.

Everybody kept silent for decades and refused to reveal the reasons which led to her mother`s killing, Zein insists and work hard, but in vain; to collect details as much as possible.


When she realized the truth and published it in a story, Zein herself was facing an assassination attempt.

But she had already determined to become a writer, revealing what is hidden by the guards of silence.

The question is whether she will be able to continue this way on maybe not?
Inspired by Ghada al-Samman; the well-reputed Arab Syrian writer, journalist and novelist, Syria Screenwriter & Director Samir Zekra accomplished his new movie “Guards of Silence” to tell this challenge and furious story which was basically related to Arabic Culture & Society.
Screenwriter & Director Samir Zekra, was born in Beirut in 1945. He grew up and lived in Aleppo. He graduated from the High Institute of Cinematic Studies in Moscow. During his study he realized some short feature films such as (The Drunken Is Singing) adapted from a short story by Najib Mahfouz, and (The Airport) adapted from a novel by Arthur Haley.
In 1980, he realized (About her), a documentary of medium length about the situation of women in Syria which won the Silver Award of 2nd Damascus Film Festival.
In 1981, he wrote and directed his first feature film (The Incident of Half the Meter) adapted from a novel of the same title by Sabri Mousa. It won the Bronze Award of Valencia festival, and in 1983, he participated with Mohammad Malas in writing the script of the feature film (The City’s Dreams).

In 1986 he wrote and directed his second feature film (The Events of the Coming year) which won the Second Award in Annabah Festibal, Algeria, and that of female acting and O.E.I.E. Award of the Catholic Organization of Cinema and TV.
In 1998, he wrote and directed the feature film (The Strangers Dust) adapted from a novel of the same title written by Faisal Khartash. This film participated in many international festivals and won the Award of the best Arabic Film in Cairo Film Festival in 1998, and the awards of cinematography and acting in Bahrain Festival 1999, and in the Festival of Arabic Cinema in The Institute of the Arab World in Paris.
In 2005, he made a feature film titled (Public Relations), which won the Bronze Award in Damascus International Film Festival, in addition to Best Actor (Fares El Helou) Award from Valencia Film Festival.

“Guards of Silence” was produced by the Syrian National Film Organization.
