Syria Offering US$30 Billion Infrastructure Projects To Malaysian Contractors

(DP-News- Bernama)

KUALA LUMPUR, -- Syria is offering Malaysian contractors US$30 billion worth of infrastructure projects under a five-year Public-Private Partnership (PPP) programme.
Syria Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Abdullah Al-Dardari said under the programme, which started last year, the government and the private sector would invest US$100 billion for the development of productive sectors, human development and infrastructures.

"Of the US$100 billion, US$30 billion will be spent for infrastructure projects, including building the US$1.8 billion North-South and East-West Toll Road and US$400 million Great Damascus Bypass Road," he told a dialogue with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Friday.

Present were CIDB chairman Datuk Ir Hamzah Hasan and Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmad Arnous.

Abdullah said Malaysian contractors, especially highway construction, are welcomed to participate in his country's growing construction sector.

"Malaysian contractors have excellent international reputation in highway construction and we would like to take advantage of the expertise," he said.

He said Syria has 800km of new highway projects which would be announced in the next few months.

To date, Malaysian contractors have managed to secure two projects in Syria worth USD 65 million.

Abdullah also invited Malaysian companies to work with their Syrian counterparts in the transportation and power generation sectors and other areas that might have caught the companies' interest.

He said his country's 3,500MW electricity requirement in the next five years might trigger Malaysian companies' interest.

Furthermore, he said, Malaysian companies were given the opportunity to hold 100 per cent equity in any businesses established in Syria.

"We encourage Malaysian companies to establish local partnerships and allow 100 per cent ownership if they prefer to," added Abdullah who is currently in Malaysia for a four-day visit.

Last year, Malaysia and Syria chalked up trade to the tune of USD 400 million, making the country Malaysia's major trading partner from the Middle East.
