People's Assembly Calls for Protecting National Industrial and Agricultural Production

Damascus – In a session chaired by the Speaker Mahmoud al-Abrash, the People's Assembly on Wednesday continued discussing the report of the Budget and Accounts Committee on the accounts of the General State Budget of 2009.

The Assembly also passed a number of bills and referred others to the relevant committees for further studies.

During the session, Assembly members called for dealing with the issue of random housing, supporting the Syrian desert, investing the Palmyra salt mine which produces around 145,000 tons of salt and provided around 2,000 job opportunities, expanding development projects in the Syrian Desert, protecting national industrial and agricultural production, and supporting the public sector's companies, among other issues.



Minister of Finance Mohammad al-Hussein affirmed that the government is supporting the projects and establishments of the public sector, noting that the deficit in the 2009 State Budget amounted to 1.69% of the GDP.

Minister of Transport Yarob Badr said that companies affiliated with his Ministry achieved positive results in terms of surplus and profits, and that the Ministry carried out 96% of its investment plan for 2009.

He also pointed out to the role of the Ministry's establishments and companies and transporting Syrians from Libya with over 18,000 Syrians transported, 12,000 of which by air and the rest by sea.

Minister of Housing and Construction Omar Ghalawanji said that the General Housing Establishment is currently constructing around 40,000 houses across 30 areas, and that the Establishment constructed around 34,000 houses during the 10th five-year plan.

He added that the cooperative housing sector is working on 1,900 projects containing around 115,000 houses, 20,000 of which have been completed so far.

Ghalawanji said that the construction sector carried out projects worth SYP 52 billion in 2010, stressing the need for expanding economic and social development projects in the 11th five-year plan to SYP 500 billion.

The Assembly referred the members' written questions to the relevant bodies through the Prime Ministry before adjourning.
