Syria renovated a Basaltic Lion-shaped Bust

(Dp-news – Sana)

Hama, Central Syria- Chairman of Hama Antiquities Department, Abdul-Kader Firzat, said that the restoration works included the completion of several parts of the bust along with fixing the damaged parts of it. The restoration aimed at documenting this precious and rare artifact whose height is 90cm while its width is 60cm.

On Tuesday, Hama Antiquities Department completed the restoration of a basalt-made lion bust dating back to the Aramaic Age 1200 BC.
Firzat, Chairman of Hama Antiquities Department, added that the bust is considered one of the rare archeological monuments which were displayed at the Iron Age Hall in Hama National Museum.

He indicated that the Danish expedition excavated the Royal Alley in the Ancient Aramaic City in Hama during the period between 1932 and 1937 as it unearthed the bust at the Castle Site.

The busts or statues of lions spread at the gates of the royal palaces at the Aramaic Age, and they were used as decorations which represent a symbol of power. They were affected by Hittite civilization in northern Syria.

Hama National Museum embraces one of the most wonderful basalt-made lion statues in the world which weighs 10 tons, and it was unearthed by the Danish expedition in the Aramaic city of Hama.

The statue was displayed by Copenhagen Museum to carry out restoration works on it, and it remained at the Museum for more than half a century. In the 1990s Syria and Denmark signed an agreement on bringing the statue back to its cradle in Hama as it is displayed nowadays at the National Museum.
